This British gun was sold at auction the other day. Can anyone tell me something about the gun and its rough value. There were small hairline cracks in the stock (perhaps repairs?) and the forend was loose. Barrels appeared to be damascus.
While it was a pretty gun and fit well, I didn't bid -- too many unknowns.

I own a L. Jeffries retailed 16ga. The action is a Westley Richards. It's a very nice gun. I've had offers of $1600 and passed. I think LJ retailed a lot of other makers guns with his name on them.

Lincoln J. is a well enough known name. They "molted" into an engineering company and recently sold out their gunmaking. They seem to have been inclined more toward decentqualitynuttinspecial boxlocks. That pretty much describes the gun shown. LJ name is a Brand Value level three (BV3). Original Quality grade is, oh, say OQ7 (third level BLE/second level BLNE). Current Condition level would be maybe CC6 (shootable but needs some repairs and restoration). BV3-OQ7-CC6 = $690. If it is a non-ejector gun, you can make a case for OQ8 and if the barrels are questionable for shootable without repair, you can make a case for CC8. BV3-OQ8-CC8 = $200. 16 gague gets maybe a 1.5X bump for being a hot item - $300 to $1135. I realize that is a big window, but we don't have a lot of really vital details about the condition and quality.

Rocketman, how do you plug a gun made by one maker and sold by another with their name on it? I'm really not interested in using your formula just wanted to know if you made an allowance for it.

MH - the market seems to consider that aspect in the Brand Value of the maker's name. This was common enough practice within the Brit trade that it seems to have washed out - either the broad market doesn't know or doesn't care. In this case, I'd bet that LJ bought in parts and actually made most of the gun themselves. William Evans (BV2) mostly bought in their guns and their shop seems to have done some finishing, but mostly repairs and maintenance. Army and Navy (BV3) did very similar, but did not establish the same BV as Evans - go figure.

If the above gun was in Current Condition level four (CC4 = heavy use, but no abuse) the price would about double; BV3-OQ7-CC4 = $1225, so in 16 gauge $1225 X 1.5 = $1835. So, Mike, if your gun is a better grade or in better condition, you were probably quite right to turn down $1600.

The $770 (you have to include the buyer's premium in the price, esp. the 20% buyer's premium from the bigger UK auctions!) seems to fit what we know. Had the price been much more or much less, we would have had to estimate whether there was a condition we had assumed incorrectly or if someone had really incorrectly valued the gun.

Remember, I don't represent my model as nailing the price, rather I think it will get you near enough to the price to recognize bargains and keep from getting ripped too badly. Also, it organizes guns in a way that it makes understanding/seeing the overall Brit/Continental market much easier for most people. From this jumpstart, it is easier to start adding in details. IMO.

Since it was an auction where most (I assume)attendees probably never heard of Lincoln Jeffries and were reluctant to bid, wouldn't that depress demand and therefore depress the final price?
Does your system take something like that into account?
