Not a big thing but interesting to me. I have had Townsend Whelen's Wundhammer 1903 Sporter for a few years and everyone who looks at it ask about the notches cut into the bottom of the buttstock.

My response has been that this I could not imagine Whelen cutting notches in his custom rifle and felt that this was after it left his hands.

The NRA's National Firearms Museum is now on line with the Peterson collection and I have been looking this over. They now have a lot of their collection on line buy "Search".

I pulled up Townsend Whelen's Adolph sporter and guess what?

Whelen's Adolph

I wanted to see a better picture of the family crest and the engraving and got a surprise for my effort.

Talk about Winchester pistol grip conversion!!!
That's the only split lever, pistol grip M-95 I've ever seen and the lever looks very altered!

That catalog picture is of the very early, first type, Flat Side Model 1895. Their levers were one piece, not split, straight or pistol grip.

Factory pistol grip M 1895s were dropped when they went to the two piece lever. However some pistol grip stocks were made, but they used the straight tang and lever.

The Whelen '95 was altered aftermarket. And done very nicely at that!

Im sure this is known. Hundreds of guns from Peterson collection were auctioned off this last october by Little Johns. I dont know if it was the whole collection or just some of it. I have a copy of the catalog and attended the Auctions. Lot of nice guns.

The rifle I was most interested in from the Peterson collection was not at auction but is at the NRA.

I'm pretty sure that's a small ring kurz action, but it's hard to tell with the erector set in the way. Very nice but with some odd features like the extra ebony and strange pitch...
Did you see this G&H 98 Mauser? Ron Long, Denver

Yep! one of the miss-marked ones in the collection. There are several nice Griffin & Howe rifles and a nice Hoffman 505.

This Rifle has an interesting and tragic Alaskan connection. I've thought several times that I might write about it but suspect the NRA would not let me publish their pictures. Guess I should ask again.

You can click and watch a presentation on this rifle in the lower right.
