Rockdoc - I was one of those stubborn Americans (Metric? NO WAY!) back in the seventies. However, my father, who started as a carpenter in his early youth and ended up engineering all kinds of heavy construction (dams, bridges, roadways etc) worked abroad many times before and after the war (WW2), countries where the metric system was the standard. He told me how wrong I was and extolled the virtues of the metric system in construction and engineering. He really thought that pragmatically, it would be a leap forward for this country. He was disappointed it never caught on, something I didn't have the scope to appreciate at the time.
