The blocks on your rifle are the older style scope mounts without the half moon cutout on the edge. The Unertl mounting screws have a concave end that engages the half moon cutout. These appear to be for the early scopes that had a hole on the side into which the pointed end of the mount screw fit. Using improper screws to mount the scope will damage the edge of the blocks.

Hi Herschel,
Ty for the information. I am NOT a expert when it comes to Sedgleys but I assumed the rifle came with a unertl scope. When I first saw this rifle in the late 1970s the gentleman who owned the rifle had a scope for the rifle that was in a wooden box.
My memory is old like me and I forget what the scope looked like. When I purchased this rifle in the late 1990s he had sold the scope.
Can anyone offer any guess what scope came with this rifle?

Winchester scopes used a system with a needle like projection which protruded from the mount to the left side of the block, and Lyman continued to use this system with its target scopes after they had purchased the rights to the Winchester scope. There should be a small conical recess on the left side of the block. Lyman was the only maker I know of which furnished their products in a wooden box.
