The stock on my Merkel 203E has about a 1/4" too much drop, so I sent it out for a bending. The report back from the gunsmith was that the stock would not take the bend and any more aggressive efforts would likely result in cracking and would not likely achieve a 1/4" change in any event.
This is a sidelock so a new stock would be very expensive and not worth it for this particular gun. I would be curious to hear any thoughts on other options (besides a cheek pad). I recall reading an article by MM about David Trevallion doing a "buttectomy" on a gun to increase the LOP, where the stock was cut through the wrist along the checkering and a new piece of wood was attached. Would it be possible to a variation of that to decrease the drop?

I suggest you get your gun back and send it to someone more capable, given proper care 1/4" is not really a big deal

Thanks, Doverham What amazes me is that you're going through all this bother trying to change the drop in the first place. My collection of SxSs varies from 2 1/8" to 3" DAH and I hit what I am shooting at with any one of them, without really thinking about it. Either I am a very gifted shooter or you are getting past fanatical with your fit. Model21

Not everybody is lucky enough to be able to shoot a low stocked gun. I can do it but it takes a very conscious effort and I never shoot as well as I would with one of my guns that actually fits. While 1/4 inch isn't much, sometimes it makes a lot of difference.

Thanks JayCee. I have talked to Mike several times about barrel work but had not thought of him for stock work. He is also close which would avoid shipping costs. I may also consult with NECG.
The first outfit come recommended for a trusted source and their price was good ($95) - too good, I guess.

Is it 1/4" at the comb you need or 1/4" at the heel? Not clear. 1/4" at the comb is quite a lot. Big difference!

Some wood will bend some won't. Some will crack.
Did the gunsmith try already and it does not take the bent?

I need a 1/4" at the heel and 1/8" at the comb, plus 3/16" cast off. They claimed they tried but described the wood as "stubborn" and that it moved very little during the bending process. One concern I have is that even if the stock can be bent, will it lose the bend over time?
