Several years ago, I read an article with photos showing a pair of wing tip shoes that were hand made for Prince Charles. The interesting part is that the leather hide was from the hold of a sunken ship from the 18th century. Obviously, the Englishman who worked/restored this leather and made the shoes knew what he was doing. NY Times Article

Olive Oil  .....Worse comes to worse you can chop it up and eat it in a salad. Be the general horse's A$$ that your are, but I know saddle makers that recommend Olive Oil for use on old leather because it is basically the same oil that is used to tan leather. It work great.
