I assume that "original" means oil finish and not unfinished.

I think it's an excellent rust preventative and an outstanding solvent for bore cleaning (seems to do a great job of removing plastic fouling).

I've never used it on the hinge pin of a gun as it seems a bit thin to me. But, I'm no expert in this regard.
