The settlement of the suit about Remington shotgun barrels involved the models 1100, 870, and 3200. I had several 3200's at the time, so was interested. DuPont was trying to sell Remington at the time, and the lawsuit was an impediment to the sale, so they settled. I have always believed that it was a matter of expediency rather than any real merit of the case.

Bad News-The fellow that had the gun with the pinhole has lost
it in a house move. May not ever see the gun- but this has become a very informative post.

Thanks for the upgrade. This is much more comprehesible now. These are still very heavy loads, but it was just hard to imagine a load of near 13 drams of powder in a 12ga. the info you provided is greatly appreciated as it gives much more detail on these tests than is often seen, that being in most cases nothing more than the order of placement.
With the greater uniformity of the Whitworth, one can easily see that many might indeed be inclined to give it 1st place.

In one machine shop I worked in we had a Magna-Flux machine. This was used to detect surface cracks, it would not generally work on internal cracks. It would though pick up on extremely small ones which were virtually undetectable by eye. It worked by applying a liquid to the part which contained magnetic particles (the one we used was green in clor). The part was then held between the poles of an electric magnet. On even a micrscopic crack magnetic poles would be established on opposite sides which attracted the particles from the liquid. Larger cracks would be visible to the naked eye, but we always used this in conjunction with a Black Light, which would make those green lines stand out like a Neon Sign. I do not know what ingredients the liquid consisted of, but highly suspect you are totaly correct in your memory as to that being the cause of your Dads allergic reaction.

2-piper, there is so much misunderstanding about the Birmingham Gun Trials I have been considering putting together an article reviewing the entire trial complete with all the tables and methodology used. Perhaps some magazine would like to publish it. Some years ago I believe the DGJ published an article on it but was so incomplete and misleading that much of what we hear today probably stemed from it. Little known is that so much was left out in the original trial that the Field magazine conducted their own tests later on using fewer barrels but chambered them and tested them to complete failure. Very interesting stuff.

2-Piper, thanks for your comments on the Magna-Flux. I do remember him mentioning that the liquid was green. Even wearing protective gloves, he reacted to it.
