I've been reading about using Loctite 609 to build up, under scope bases, on receivers that are not perfectly flat or straight. I have a Browning Superposed that has a section of a few inches where the rib has come loose. Has anyone here used 609 to repair a loose rib, or any other purpose?

Jim, in my conversations with the techs at Loctite I gathered that no Loctite can withstand significant shear forces. All of them are designed for cylindrical applications. Their one product intended to withstand these forces is Black Max, which contains microscopic rubber particles giving the product some flexibility. I think you'll be disappointed with 609 in your application--the stress' placed on the barrel will impart the shear forces the adhesive can't tolerate.

I would also consider that Loctite or any other adhesive as a temporary rib repair could complicate properly cleaning of rib and barrel surfaces prior to future conventional soldering.

I think you're going to have to go with sweating it with solder, Jim. If the separation of your rib is in the same location (just aft of the rib extension )where it commonly occurs on Super barrels, at least the overhanging scarf joint with hold it down and possibly prevent it from going further.

If you elect to send it out, Art's does excellent work. They put a rib back on a 20 for a friend that had the rib shot completely off [solder melted] in a hot corner in S. America. It ran aprox $400 at the time, but you could not tell it from new when it was returned and the repair time was very reasonable considering they had to receive it, inspect it, call my friend with their estimate, do the work & return it to him, all in < a month for the whole.

Call it what you want, but I did see a guy show up for deer rifle sighting in with a scope taped to the top of the receiver.
