T, I have never tried browning. I believe the only difference is the boiling. The boiling turns them black. I lightly heated these with a small hand held propane torch. The barrels were warm to the touch but would not burn you.

Yeah if it's only warm I guess it'll be fine. I'm just pausing over how to finish now really...wonder what others do...I've used hard beeswax in the past, my mate Doug found loitering here sometimes, has suggested a canuba based wax these days is good.

After browning I wash them with hot water with small amount of baking soda . Then I oil them and set overnight . Then I rub them down with a clean rag and apply Watco Natural Oil finish on lightly and it preserves them well.
