I have seen some nasty things said about the Lefever Nitro Special and its cousin the Western Arms gun. I have a few of these old guns and find them to be very good field guns. While they are not beautifully engraved and don't have fancy grade wood, they seem to work very well and the workmanship is more than acceptable to me.
I have one made in 1922, that had a diet of shells including lots of high brass 1 1/4 loads. ( my grandpa didn't know any better)It's still tight and going strong. I only use 1 oz loads.
I like you comments, to see what I might be missing.

Thanks

You are not missing anything. I think your experience tells the tale. Strong sturdy shotguns. Purdey's they are not, serviceable shotguns they are. There are many here who delight in dising everything. Go with what you know to be true.

What is this Nitro Special "A grade" business? I didn't know that there were different grades of Nitro Specials.

Yup, there were! Different models actually, but the "A" Grade is the best of the Ithaca Lefevers...Geo

The Ithaca Lefever A grade boxlock is not a Nitro Special. They have distinctly different frames. They look similar to an Ithaca NID and I have read that the A grade and the NID used the same barrels. I don't know if the A and NID are the same internally.

That's it and it's restored very nicely except for the recoil pad, but it's not $4200 nice!. They are trying to pay for the restoration.

Where exactly did you hear all of these nasty things said about the Nitro Special? From some gun shop jockey trying to sell you a bunch of BS so you will buy his new and improved junk?
All the shotgun boards I’ve been on for years say nothing but good things about a Nitro Special so I would get yourself a better more knowledgeable set of hunting companions that know something about guns and leave the sales jockey at home.
