Does anyone know much about this English maker, Edwinson Green?

1. What years was he in business?

2. When would shotgun number 6,000 likely have been made? Are records available?

3. Were/are his shotguns considered either run-of-the-mill, or above average?

4. Any other info would be appreciated. THANKS.

Yes, there is a lot written about him. Edwinson Charles Green Born 1842 died 1930. In business at various addresses in Cheltenham and Gloucester. The firm continued and was still in business until around 1980 or so. Gun production ceased around 1947. Gun number 6,000 would be 1897 and looking at what I have it may have been the number 1 gun of a pair to 6001. Guns were still in the 6 thousand range until 1927. He patented an Over/Under gun and a three barrelled gun also. At that time in 1897 he would, or should, have been trading as Edwin Charles Green & Son 87, High Street, Cheltenham. Lagopus.....

E C Green seemed to have an Agency in the U.S. I've had a couple of them, but they are gone. The Agency was a hardware [?] store in Indiana or Illinois. Both of my guns were hammer guns with game scenes in the medium quality area, I would assume.

Lewis Potter, gunsmith of Pershore, Worcestershire owns the name and some of his guns, including ( I think a three barrelled one) Purdey bought the O/U patent rights before they bought Woodward.Which perhaps could suggest that Purdey historically at least were not the sharpest knife in the box?

Hi,
I have 2 guns from this maker, first is a 12G boxlock with damascus BBLs which has never missed a duck yet with me it swings perfectly. It went on a raft trip for 10 days down the ganges river in India in 1948 with the previous owner a lawyer from the UK.
My second is a fixer upper hammergun I bought it for a song (and my singing is awfull) in 1996

Jerry, Green has brand value (BV) level three, which is 2/3 of BV2 and 1/2 of BV1 (Boss, H&H, Purdey, and Woodward). Guns were made to a price point which translates into an original quality grade (OQ); OQ1 is a best work grade gun and OQ9 is a colonial/farmer grade. With the possible exception of Boss, all brand names supplied guns of various OQ grade at various times in their histories. Trying to associate a single OQ grade with a maker's name is a dead end. If you have a Green gun of OQ1, it will value at about 1/2 of a OQ1 gun with a BV1 brand name, both guns in the same current condition level (CC).

Let me know if that isn't clear.
