I propose we make the first day of “bird season” the start of the New Year. For me, it has been for 40 years although I had never given it that name. The opening day tradition was passed on to me by my hunting buddy and sports writer J.B. Stearns who always celebrated the end of the first hunt with the best wine and food of the year. I am sure J.B. would have seconded my new calendar. Before you dissent, please consider that January first isn’t the shortest or longest day of the year anywhere on earth nor is it when the earth is closest or furthest from the sun that particular day.
