The gentleman (KY Jon)is not really full of hot air. I have used machinist made 10 to 12, 8 to 10, and 8 to 12 chamber inserts for many years. Today, the better idea is to use store bought inserts, but they are a fairly recent development. My assumption is that the machinist made inserts were not made from bar stock, but from tubing that was as close to inside and outside dimension as the machinist could buy it. The person who made my inserts in various sizes was a bit secretive about his methods.

By the way hOmeboy, I am not sending any pictures of my inserts. They are kind of private.

i have a set of gauge mates 10/12 ga.the problem i have is the reducers have a slit in them an when you fire 12ga in them they split in the same place as the insert. i also made a set 12/20 years ago in a machine shop class,we made them out of tool steel bar stock.took alot of tyme and hand fitting to our semi trained hands!!!!

My home made set does not have the split down the side. But if the empty swells it is a real bugger to get out sometimes. The store bought set does have the split down the side. I use the home made set most of the time. Federal Paper hulls work well for me and I have thousands of them.
Even if I did not, it is still far cheaper to loose a 12 empty each time, due to a split, than to find a large supply of 10 empties. I use to think 28's were hard to find but they are common compared to 10's. At most skeet or trap ranges you can get all the free once fired 12 ga. Remington Gun Club or AA empties you want out of the trash can or off the field. Load them once and throw them away.

I Honestly don't believe a 10 to 12 (because of the thinness of them) can be made to function without the slit.

wrong jOe,
shot with a guy today who used 10-12 Browning Little Skeeters (bought last week at the Grand American for $8/pr)
Worked great in his Daly 10ga. You do have to push the empty out and it does slow down a round of clays, but he seemed to be enjoying himself.

Russ Ruppel walked me through the making of a home made set of 10 to 12ga inserts a decade or more ago.
There was a machine shop next door to my employer at the time and one of the machinists liked a challenge.
I took him the barrels of my Scott 10ga, the barrels of my Scott 12ga and two of my Ballard 10ga brass cases.
I asked that the inserts match the 12ga chambers as closely as possible.
I used those inserts (without slit) for many hundreds/thousands of rounds.
I posted a step by step photo essay of them being made and used. Long gone from the archives before jOe blessed us with his presence. I may have the pictures on the external hard drive I use for back-ups but I don't feel the need to dig them out.

How's that Scott 10 ga. coming along you haven't "blessed us" with its pressance in quite a while...still a basket case ?
Just so everyone knows our history...tell them about the W&C Scott I sent back to Westley Richards that was on consignment from you.....you need to get over it and move on.

Eightbore is spot on, if not stepped chambers you are only talking about 1/8", use the longer hulls...if you really are worried you should be able to fit nearly any 2 7/8" load in a 2 5/8" long hull if you roll crimp them. The bonus is pressure generally is reduced by doing this.
I had a rather interesting person on the east coast make an 8 to ten set of adapters....said he turned them out of bar stock. They are not slit but need to be:(
Best, Mark
