There are two basic types of checkering, at least on guns I have owned or used, at least back to somewhere in latter half of 1800s. One is typically called "net" checkering and other is generally called "diamand" checkering (i.e. "pointed" checkering). Often unknowing folks consider net checkering to be extensively worn checkering. One even sees "restored" checkering that is result of some ingnoramus having deepened net checkering into pointed checkering!!
After 50+ years of using both net and pointed checkered gun grips, I see no effective difference in ability to give secure grip.
