I occasionally do some Charcoal Bluing here in the shop, It’s not a difficult concept or process; think rust bluing…rather simple process, but the devil is in the details.

Parts need to be clean and not allowed to hit air or scaling will occur. The hot charcoal gives off carbon monoxide/dioxide providing a small protective envelope around the parts. Parts with different masses occasionally give problems.

I’m not sure that I would do it in a pit dug in the back yard, but, I guess some folks do.
