My newest treasure arrived today. It's a Lefever G grade, made in 1905. On the underside of both barrels, at the breech end is stamped SBCo1. The "o" is actually up, even wth the top of the "C", suggesting that it might read as SB Company? It's a 12 ga. and looks like a keeper. Any ideas? Thank you, JL

Tube Makers Marks -- I have observed LLH, SB&Co., and a D with a three-lobed crown over it on several American doubles -- Ansley H. Fox, Ithaca, Lefever, etc.
LLH is the mark of Lochet Habran of Jurille, Belgium. Three-lobed crown over a D = Didiere barrel works of St Etienne, France. The SB&Co. mark has a couple of explinations, and I don't know for sure which is correct. Walt Snyder in his Ithaca book said it was S. Buckley and Co. of the U.S. Other sources have reported Sanderson Bros. & Co., a Sheifield, England, company that set up a branch in Syracuse, New York. I have found Sanderson Bros. & Company ads in old Syracuse city directories. In John Houchin's article on L.C. Smith barrel steel he mentions that the Crucible Steel Co. purchased Sanderson Bros. in 1900. It makes sense that steel companies in Syracuse would be provinding tubes to the likes of L.C. Smith and Lefever Arms Co. of that area.

I have a Lefever SBT that I getting ready to sell and I noticed LLH stamped on the barrel in front of the flats!! The serial dates the gun to 1937, does it seem likely that Ithaca was still getting barrels from Belgium at that time? Jim

Jim, I haven't heard about the SBCo1 marking. I have an E grade with the LLH marking. Can you email me pictures of the markings, also showing the serial #? I would like to run something on it in the Lefever Collectors Association newsletter. Do the barrels have any letters stamped on or around the forend lug? Watch out for these Lefevers. They're addictive. It's just questions like yours that get people hooked. Rich

I took some pic's for Richard. Looking closely at them suggests the marking might be SBCoL. JL

Jim; I have an H grade SN 67333 with steel bbls stamped SB&C. The stamp is deeper at the S & sort of fades out at the C, with nothing else showing. Ahead of the S a little bit is a small diamond (about same ht as the S) with nothing inside. Is yours steel or damascus? I also have a two hook damascus G SN 20633 with about half (right side) a makers stamp. This one has an oval with a crown in top & in bottom what shows is an L. I have a reference as to what the entire mark should be & who the bbl maker was but would have to look it up. These are the only two I have with a bbl makers stamp on them.

2-piper, Could you send me pics of your Lefever with the markings similar to Jim Legg's? I would like to run something on them in an up-coming newsletter to see if we can run down more info on them. Thanks. Rich RichardBrewster@nyc.rr.com

Rich; Will try & get it done over the next day or so. Will be gone most of tomorrow helping my Sister take my Brother-in-Law to the hospital for some bone density tests. If I can get good shots will just go ahead & send pics of both.
