Raimey - can you explain the 2.5 G Sch P, 2.6 g BL; 2.1 g BP? I understand the STMg indicate suitable for steel clad bullets (post WWI ?) Was it common to reproof? The serial number is 1394 is there a site that could identify the date of manufacture?

2.5 grams of Schultze powder
2.6 grams of lead
2.1 grams of Military Flake Powder(I'm assuming "BP" is Blättchenpulver which is usually denoted by "GPB" which with the "Crown" over "N" was in use since July 23rd, 1893)
And you have the "Crown" over "F"(Gothic) which I'm not sure of its origin.
I'll look at the marks a bit closer but the "Crown" over "N" with load data, sometimes service, sometimes proof, was voluntary so I really can't say why the "Eagle Nitro" proof is there except that it was made in 1912 during the rules change and the maker opted for it or the purchaser requested it. Yes, reproof was common as when Nitro proof was law, reproof was probably sold as the "have to have" to be up with the Jones.
I haven't look close but are there any initials on the tubes?

Raimey: Where on tubes would initials be? I have notice that on the receiver ther is 2 sets of I believe serial numbers - one the same as the barrel and another higher one.

I see something near the forend lug and sometimes it is on the leftside of the rifled tube near the lumps.
I'm not sure of a Brother's Merkel serial number list.

Now this guess notes that a Sauer Model 25/26 has a side cocker, but the pin configuration is very similar but that's about as far as it goes. I also guess the letter adjacent to the forend lug to be a "M". Then there something next to it.

In my oldest catalog ca 1905 the modell XXVIII sidelock drilling have details that look very identic to your drilling.
The serialnumber indicate may be pre 1905. It is one of the oldest Gebrüder Merkels I have seen photos of.
