Kensal,
Would you pay the same price for a gun made by a BV3 (or even an unknown name) as a Purdey assuming the quality were equal? I bet you wouldn't.
Sure, everyone has to start out somewhere - but when it comes to vintage guns the chips were all in long ago. The likes of Purdey and H&H came out on top for a reason - and that's why people pay more for one, still.
So what I'm saying is even if a Joe Blow SLE is every bit as good as a Purdey in terms of quality, you still are going to pay more for the Purdey name and rightfully so.

Action & locks look Spanish. Toplever, too.
Some parts look too big - like it's a 12g action.
Odd gun.
95% of the people out there want a brand name and everything that goes with it.
Why else would people pay more for a polished up AHE Parker than a good Purdey?
Sure ain't quality & craftsmanship.
OWD

GregSy, did you buy Henry Ford IIs matched pair of Purdey's, circa 1947? You might want to run "rightfully so" past smallbore, for a second opinion.
Simply dreadful guns, that would look so good, uh, in your gunsafe.
Best, Ted

KR, keep in mind that to use the value system where a BV1 name is compared to a BV2 or BV3 name, there must have been guns of comparable OQ grade. In my experience, it is entirely possible to find best work guns (OQ1) with obscure names (BV3). Likewise, it is entirely possible to find BV1 named guns of, say, OQ6 quality (a second grade BLE). So, sure, you can have BV3 named guns of OQ1 quality grade (best work SLE). Only someone who is trying to prove that quality is name related will argue that only BV1 guns can be best work.
IMO, one must learn to sort guns by BV, OQ, and CC (current condition) to have an understanding of where the price came from.

It is my belief that I may have well assisted in the building of this gun. If so I can say that the gun originated in Spain came via Somerton Gins Somerset and was repaired/rebarrelled. If I am correct the gun is essentially a Spanish trade gun lovingly stroked by a number of Birmingham gunmakers. I could (will) look up the original cost out of personal interest. Providing the gun is still in good condition it will be okay but it certainly is not 'Best'. I personally own a 12guage Eibar that once belonged to the Earl of Bradford, this gun was a gift from the King of Spain. The gun was described by Nick Holt the auctioneer as 'a clunker' shows what he knows about guns.

From the photos, it doesn't look a lot better than an AyA to my ignorant eyes. Apart from the price.

P.S.: I should clarify this was posted before I saw Salopian's post above. jc
