Gentleman I know we have some Winchester experts on this BBS
I am looking at Winchester Model 70 in 9m/m cal. The gun was made in 1941. Looks about 90 percent. All numbers, proof marks look correct as far I can tell. The wood have some handling marks and dings, metal is good. The asking price is 6000. What do you think? Thanks for you input. Casey

Very rare cal.,is the gun you are looking at a rifle or carbine? I would say the price is high for a rifle, about right for a carbine. Craig

Dave Riffle: http://daverifflegunsales.com.phtemp.com/70.htm currently lists one (with pics) in 98% and he's asking $10,000 for it. You might want to take a look. DeWayne

Casey,
If untouched and if you got it for $5K I would say great deal. Somewhere in between is certainly a good deal. Not many of these around.

I've hunted with and collected M70's since I was a kid so I'm fairly familar with them. I have to ask, what is your intent? If you spend the $6k on the 9mm M70, you'll get a very rare collector gun that has no real utility use at all. That is, unless you want to plunk a deer or whatever with an oddball caliber. The best you could hope for is to find another collector down the road and make some money on it (good luck). M70 guys are all getting older and many are selling their collections; and most younger gents could care less for a pre-64. Everyone seems to need a WSM or a RSUM right now. On the other hand if you spend the 6k on a M21 or a graded Fox, etc. you can hunt and/or shoot clays with it, and still hope to make some money down the road. If anything, classic doubles are enjoying a popularity surge right now, unlike M70's. And even if you don't see any appreciation, so what? You will get the enjoyment out of a good classic double, more so than having the 9mm M70 stacked in the safe 99.999% of the time. I guess what I'm saying is, unless you are a purist collector who just has to have something highly unusual, there are better places to put the 6k. IMO of course. Silvers

I'm with Silvers. The 9X57, albeit indispensable for the serious M70 collector, is not exactly my idea of a fun gun.
BTW, M70s are about as frequently humped up as '86s. Buyer beware, though 90% condition is a plus. I personally bore witness to the "creation" of some humped up 9s back in the late '80s - a rewriting of Winchester history. These were, of course, pristine in terms of condition. No, I did not participate in this endeavor.

If I wanted a classic rifle in metric caliber in that price range I would look for Oberndorf Mauser Sporter Type A. It's hard to get excieted over that red stain "birch like" stock and those crude rear sights that old Winchesters have.

You guys make a lot of sense I never looked at it this way. But if I can get it for a good price (less than 5k.or 4) who knows? Maybe I can sell it and get me a nice SxS. Casey
