Re: 1903 Colt, too bad his Grandfather didn't buy a 1911, but they were probably kind of hard to get in 1911.

How'd this turn out, is it a Sedgley?

It is a Sedgley, built on an action from 1905, very original, appears to have original stock finish and blue. Bolt has the serial stamped at the back of the handle, Sedgley barrel stamp, s in circle proof on barrel. I think barrel is a Springfield one that has been re-contured, not sure about the sling swivels, they are narrow ones as seen on European shotguns but must be original as the front one is threaded into the barrel ring ( it was bent slightly), Winchester steel buttplate. Classic standard grade iron sighted Sedgley. What could be nicer? Answer, the Sedgley displayed in a nice wood case with the 1903 Colt.

You did good!

Most likley a Winchester barrel.

Is the same number stamped on the bottom of the rear of the action?

Michael, I looked no # there but still has the the original serial on receiver ring so guess they felt it wasn't necessary. There in a # 61 stamped on the stock behind recoil lug. The reason I thought the barrel was a Springfield is that there is remnants of a cross slot on the bottom of the barrel where the sight collar was pinned, no sign of the locating pin at the receiver. if so it was re-contured as it is not like an issue barrel. My theory (Unproven)is that they used the rifle serial number and and left it on the rifle if it was a customers rifle they started with. Many have the the receiver cleaned off and a Sedgley number on the rifle and bolt.

Your rifle does not appear to have the safety firing pin and speed lock so a early rifle.

Yup, in my experience, a Sedgely 03 with a visible serial number is a rare bird. I like Michael's theory.
