Hello All,

Is the Simson 16 ga sxs frame a true 16 ga frame ?
Or is the 16 ga built on a 12 ga frame ?
The gun has German proof marks and an 856 date code ( Aug 1956 )
Same dimensions are:
1.09" firing pin centers
2.14" across the side clips (Widest oint on the standing breech)
1.59" across the action at the bolster ( Widest point just below standing breech )
0.89" depth of the action ( Action flat to center of trigger plate

Thanks

When I was stationed in Germany in the last 1990 and toured the Merkel factory in Suhl, I was told the 12, 16 and 20 were built on their own size frame. Simson's were built in that same factory.

Just measured my Merkel 16 (supposedly on its own frame) built in Jan of 1993.

Between the two firing pins (inside edge to inside edge) is exactly .917.

Across the side clips 2.14"

Across the action at the bolster 1.6

Depth of action .90

Compared to my Sidelock Hubertus 12 gauge also built in that same factory:

1.056 firing pin center

2.27 across the side clips

1.62 across the action at the bolster

.929 depth of action

Based on above I'd say it wasn't built on a 12 gauge frame, but I am comparing a boxlock to a sidelock. Hope this helps.

Having had both a 12 and a 16 bore Simson, I am sure the 16 is a true 16 frame.

Between exterior of sideclips: 54mm
Between exterior of firing pins: 28.5mm
At widest part of action flats, at curve of standing breech: 40.5mm

Unfortunately no longer have the 12 bore ones to compare.

My Simson boxlock 16 ga sxs proofed 2/62 has very similar dimensions to those measured by Nitro. My Simson boxlock 12 ga sxs proofed 8/50 (that is styled exactly the same as the 16) has the following dimensions:
1.12" firing pin center
2.29" across the side clips
1.61" across the action at the bolster
.95" depth of the action

I believe the 16 is built on a true 16 ga frame.

The question here always arises in my mind as to what constitutes a "Different" frame size. I have for instance 12ga guns of the same make which have Three different firing pin spacings, three different widths & heights of the standing breech. The rest of the frames, bar etc are all identical as close as can be told.
Some might call these different frames, personally I call it simply modifications of the same basic frame. I personally feel for a "True Dedicated" frame size the entire frame has to be proportioned down.
I detest to see a small gauge gun built on a frame in which the bar is about as wide as the bbl breechs, as is sometimes seen on the .410 & to a slightly lesser extent on the 28ga.
