I've receivede a M1905 Mannlicher-Schoenauer today, the "English" version with single trigger, factory grip-mounted peep sight and take-down system. I have a couple of full stock 'Schoenauers but this is my first take-down. So what is the proper procedure to take it down? Thanks in advance. With kind regards, Jani

All you have to do is flip over the lever in front of the trigger guard and push out the cross pin from the forend. The action and barrel then lift out of the stock.

You will also need to remove the magazine assembly, in addition to the other steps described by Joel.
Congratulations on your new acquisition.

Thanks. I managed to get it apart and found out that it was proofed in 1922. This is a shooter not a collectors item as it has been reberraled to 7x57 Mauser - one of the reasons I bought it. With kind regards, Jani

Another take-down Mann.-Sch. came here today. Rebarreled to 8x57 IS (8mm Mauser) and model number covered by mount base so I'm not sure which model is it. Serial number is 9489 and it was proofed in Vienna in 1928. According to my old notes #9630 was a M.1910 proofed in 1929, so I think my new aquisition is a Model 1910 as well. Can this be confirmed by other serial numbers/years? With kind regards, Jani

Are you sure it is rebarreled? The 1908 came in 8X56. Here in the US Remington made the same cartridge for both the 8X57 and the 8X56. I used to own a 1908 in "8MM Norm" which turned out to be an 8X57.

1908s were commonly rechambered to 8x57, the dimensions are very close. I just traded off a finish reamer that was used for that purpose and that purpose only, first for the original purchaser and later for me.
Also FYI, in the 2 1908s that I've owned, the grooves measured 0.327"-0.328" (same in 1 1888 Commission Rifle in my rack). In my early ignorance I had Bob Snapp rebore the first one to 9x57 and it was a real jewel although also a real thumper. The second one I shot in the original 8mm bore with 0.328" groove and had good results with normal 0.323" 8mm bullets. Regards, Joe

Yes, I'm quite sure it's rebarreled (with an unmarked barrel), and not a model 1908. According to my old notes M.1908 reached this serial number about a decade earlier: M.1908 #10398 was proofed in 1920. With kind regards, Jani

Jani,
I have never seen a published list of serial numbers by year for Mannlicher-Schoenauer rifles, especially pre-WW2. Are your notes in a form that could be shared with the world?

More than 20 years ago, I played with a M-1910 9.5 mm take down that came apart at a joint ahead of the action. The stock was 2-piece, with a metal take-down section just ahead of the receiver ring. Has anyone seen one of those?
