I have to believe the patina, of oxidized linseed oil and edge wore rust blueing - that can only be gained thru time, plays a significant part in our thoughts about when the peak of craftsmanship occurred. I believe it has yet to come.
There are certain charming effects that we have learned to appreciate and love that can only be produced by the tools avaiable at the period of the firearm, however this should not be confused as craftsmanship. The skills and craft of todays makers have only improved with time. This is most apparent in todays engravers and checkering. IMHO
