If I am correctly interpreting this as being the hinge pin & hook, when the bbls contaact the breech in closing any clearance there will immediately be reduced to ZERO. If the bbls close & you have clearance between the pin & hook, You Got Problems.
Haven't read the article but perhaps he was speaking of when the gun is open this should be the free clearance for moving established by fit of the forend to knuckle. Of course if you have one of the American guns fitted with those ignorant J springs which pulls the hook into the pin & provides you with max friction during the entire opening & closing cycles You "Ain't Never Got No Clearance There".
