any recommendations?
I've looked at Brownell's and see that they carry a number of versions from Galazan.

For measuring chokes there are great many different styles. Unfortunately if you don't know what the bore is, the guage is useless if someone honed the bores.
Skeet's makes a nice dial indicator bore gage, that once calibrated to the ring and inserted into the muzzle all the way will give you bore and withdrawing it will give you choke. I believe Skeet's is for 12ga. and 16 ga. 100 Straight sells once from 12 ga.-28 ga. for $450.00 or I believe they will do 10 ga. -20 ga.

I use an internal dial caliper. It works fine for everything but the 410, also makes a greeat chamber gauge. About 100 from MSC

Galazan, the best hands down IMO, whether for choke, chamber length, bore or wall thickness. Maybe a little high pricewise but sound, consistent and reliable.

Fred, call me on my cell and give me your address and I'll send you mine when I get back from Hausman's.... unless you simply wish to buy one, in which case Galazan's is the way to go. I have both of Galazan's gauges. You need the small one for that sweet little Parker you just bought.

Thanks for the offer Dean.
It's time to own one of my own. I'm assuming that you're refering to the stepped brass model? http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=25281/Product/BRASS_CHOKE_GAUGE

Hope you all have a good time at Hausman's. Wish I were closer.

Look at the ones from Skeets, in the Brownell's catalog. I have had one for several years. They are very reasonable and their service is very good, if anything goes wrong. As Eightbore said, you need one that will measure the main part of the bore, as well as the choke area. The key-ring style tell you nothing unless you know the bore size, which isn't standard, whether it's been honed or not.

I bought one of these years ago and it was $40 or so. Gone WAY up but it works well. I marked one leg with 2 3/4 and 3" marks.

The CSP toy for the real serious jobs!!

Different manufacturers have/had different standards for choke and the constriction i.e the difference between the bore and choke and will also vary depending on the barrel ID, so the 'stepped gauges' are not for precision work. A Browning barrel will yield a different choke measurement with this type of gauge than say a Win M21 barrel.
I have the Galazan Pro Gauge which is actually a set of three fingers attached to a long rod with dial indicator. It also has a set of standards so you can measure the barrel ID. I wouldn't use anything else.
I do have a stepped gauge from Galazan but would only use on Supers which are close to what the Galazan stepped gauge shows, usually.-Dick
