Does the forend hook design remind us of any other guns ? The sliding cocking rod in the lump is similar to early Greener ones.

Early Kersten was used on sxs doubles. Many older German/Austrian o/u doubles have a Greener, usually on the right side of the (over) barrel. In Europe the Kersten is sometimes called "double Greener" (but Greener is not called "single Kersten"). With kind regards, Jani

The cocking rod in the barrel lump is somewhat similar to the one in Ansley's Fox Gun Co., Balto., MD., U.S.A. gun.

Brophy's "Plans and Specifications of the LC Smith Shotgun" has a drawing on page 243 of what he lists as the Fulton Gun, which uses a Greener type cross bolt as its only means of locking the barrels, and it uses a sliding part in the barrel lump to lift the cocking lever(s). The Fulton did not use this locking method in production, but the gun in this thread might be an experimental model to demonstrate the concept. Hunter played with the concept enough to make at least one set of drawings.

The D M Lefever built by Uncle Dan after he left LAC used a single crossbolt as the only bolt for holding the bbls closed & also assisting in axial thrust. None of the rest of this gun of course looks like a D M Lefever. In the 1905 catalog it was stated this bolt was 5/16" in dia which, working in conjunction with the hinge joint should hold anything a man could fire through it.

Jani, I've seen sxs with something similar to a Kersten. However, on the ones I've seen, the "wings" or projections extending back from the barrels don't fit into slots in the standing breech, as they do on an OU with the Kersten system. Rather, they engage recesses on the outside of the receiver. At least that's as best I recall the few I've seen.

Larry, I don't recall the name of the gun you are referring to, but I have seen and handled at least two of them. The extensions do, in fact, fit into recesses in the very wide receiver. I think I recall a DGJ article on this gun. I can refer to the article if someone will name the gun.

Eightbore, that gun would have to have a standing breech wider than Rosie's bottom--and about as ugly. I don't recall seeing anything like that, but I have seen them engaging on the exterior of the receiver, which makes them somewhat less broad in the beam.

Other American makers/designers have used the "Greener" cross-bolt. Edward George Parry comes to mind for using it on his Parry Arms Co. hammer doubles. He used just the "Greener" cross-bolt on his No. 1 gun. On Parry's No. 2 gun he used the "Greener" cross-bolt in conjunction with his "rear-acting" under-bolt.
