Just got an email from Turnbulls, apparently they are moving and some inventory of restored guns is on sale.
I took a quick look at the shotguns, I see a Parker 12 GHE a 16 CHE, a two gun set of Fox 12 CE's, a Fox 20 XE, an LC. Smith 12Ideal and a E.M. Reilly 12.
All the guns have 2-3/4" chambers listed which leads me to ask does Turnbull lengthen chambers to 2-3/4 as a matter of course? There was an Ithaca "Restoration" gunsmith a few years ago that stated any gun sent to him for any work would be opened up "to prevent liabilities", is Turnbull doing the same?
My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

I got the same e-mail, but can't answer your question. Shoot him an e-mail and ask him. I'd be surprised if he says "yes".

Don't know what Turnbull does but as a matter of course Savage used to lengthen all Fox guns returned for repair that had short chambers. If the guns failed proof testing after chamber lengthening Savage replaced the barrels at their cost charging the customer only a nominal fee. Wish there were still folks around that operated that way today.

Savage would go one step further and "stamp" the new chamber lenghth and gauge on the top-side left barrel, ruining the barrels for the owner.......without asking first...........nice, huh........So, they would just BUTCHER AND STAMP at their descretion.........like having your oil changed (for those who don't do their own) and the shop changes your ring and pinon and repaints your rear bumper..........all without asking you.......

In the 1960's it wasn't a big deal. An old Fox oh hell just another obsolete two barreled gun. I doubt if anyone thought much about it. But how many Fox guns ever went back to Savage to be worked on? I have only seen one that could be documented and it is tastefully roll stamped with the gauge and chamber length on the left barrel and I think they replaced the buttstock and refinished the forend along with re-cutting the checkering.

The numerous ones I've seen really look like an after thought, mismatched stampings, crooked and very tacky...just a step above writing your SS# on the receiver..... I don't find the gauge and chamber length markings particularly obnoxious in fact it is no worse than the roll stamping on some modern guns. I do find the late Savage buttstock without the pistol grip cap on a Philadelphia gun and what appears to be a blued receiver an obvious give away that this is not close to being an "original" gun and has probably been rode hard and put away wet too many times.
