Ammonia will turn oils and fats into a soap (saponification) which is water soluble. Dry with paper towels. This has been easy on the stock finishes I have used it on. Voting for anti-gun Democrats is dumber than giving treats to a dog that shits on a Persian Rug

I use Howard Feed and Wax - a really thin wax mix that with a little toothbrush help cleans and waxes checkering in a very nice way. Also pretty nice for the rest of the stock too for that matter but Johnsons paste wax is the hot setup for the stocks and metal if you have the time. Goof Off will remove finish but a little thinned stock finish will restore the shine. The key is to work quickly and not leave it on too long. I use a small compressor and an air gun to aid in the cleaning.
