Keith:
I'm with you and as a lifelong woodworker I learned a long time ago that if you wanted a table just get the wood and cut away everything that doesn't look like a table and it will probably turn out ok. A great deal of artistic license is of course allowable here.
However my few feeble attempts at gunstock making came to naught. Cutting away everything that doesn't look like a classic gunstock works ok until you get to the last few critical thousands of an inch. This is where the real artistry comes in and makes all the difference between stock craftmanship and stock butchery.

To revive an old thread, is anyone willing to name names here?

Is there anyone out there who has a track record of delivering results to at least the original factory specs of mid-range guns for less than $1000, either in the US or abroad?

Hell I rust blue barrels all day for $150 and I'm in PA. No language barrier here either.

The problem with restocking mid-range guns is that the labor is pretty much the same, no matter what the gun costs. Most stock makers (of which I am one) divide their quotes between labor & wood. You can certainly use an inexpensive piece of wood to reduce cost, but the labor is going to pretty much be the same. Minimal checkering ( which would probably be consistant with original checkering) will help some, but fitting & shaping is still pretty much the same.

No, because there's no demand.
