A buddy of mine has a gun that has two small chips of wood missing under the stock just behind (and next to) the receiver. What is the best way to patch and repair these small chips. They are less than 1/4 inch square. Thanks.

lay in a piece of walnut of similar grain. It takes a little patience, but can look very good. Staining and blending the finish out is the hard part.

I second Steve. I had to do that on my favorite NID Grade 2. It was a big PITA but I got a decent result - you really cant tell. Or send it off to David Trevallion- he can fix it too.

Thanks, guys. I thought maybe trying to fill it in with wood putty or something and then trying to match it. But maybe wood will be better. Thanks again.
