Thanks all. Once again, this has been very informative. Rich Cole is traveling but when gets back, I am going to follow up with him about the approach that Adam has suggested.

Let us know if anything comes of it. Last night I spent 30 mins on Cole's website looking at the wood. Man that has some beautiful stuff. If you decided to got with a standard Beretta Onyx. You get get out of this pretty cheap. A used Onyx runs about $1000 (+/- $200). Then your wood. So your looking at $2000-$2500 for your custom gun. Not to bad at all.

I haven't owned a Guerini-Rizzini, but I've looked them over more than a few times and handled them. I've owned a few Berettas. I would trust the quality of a Beretta over a Guerini. Just my 2 cents.

Just circling back on this post. After lots of indecision about which of these two guns to buy, I did the logical thing and bought both! I decided to buy the Orvis Upland Classic primarly as an upland field gun (28" barrels, ~6lbs) and a Beretta White Onyx Sporting (30" barrels, ~8lbs) primarily for clay targets.
The Upland Classic appears to be a hybrid of several Caesar Guerini field models - it manages to feel light and solid at the same time, fits well and points nicely. That said, I am not sure I would repeat the purchase through Orvis. They did a nice job with the wood and Jordan Smith is a great guy to work with. But the ejectors did not function well right out of the box (Orvis took the gun back immediately and rebuilt them) and there have been some other miscellaneous miscues on their end. Looking at the costs of buying a custom-fitted gun directly from CG (basically $1k), that may be the better way to go if you are looking for a new custom O/U.
The advice I received here on the Beretta was spot-on. I am going to shoot that gun for awhile while my bank account recovers and then send it up to Cole's for some customizing. Thanks again for the input.

Sorry to hear that you had trouble with the Orvis gun.
I have two custom Berettas from Rich Cole and they've been great guns. I enjoy them as much as I do my side by sides.
I hope it gets staightened out for you.

I am from Sherborn, nice to have a neighbor on board.
I have a one friend that I believe has had both- he has several Coles now, and swears by them. I would go with the Cole.

Thanks StormsGSP. I shot the Beretta this weekend and, even though it does not exactly match my dimensions, it was pretty good right out of the box. I will get it up to Cole's at some point for some new wood and some trigger work.
