Hi,

I'm looking for some opinion and advice.

I'm considering a bespoke 20 ga Grulla 216RB. I'd like to have the ability to hunt grouse, rabbits, & pheasant with lead and non-tox and so would like a variety of chokes to chose from. I am considering two options:

- buy the gun with a single barrel and have Briley thin wall chokes installed. Cost of choke install = approx $500 + S&H

- buy a two barrel set with fixed chokes: IC/Mod & Cyl/IC). Cost of extra barrel (proofed for steel shot) = $2400

So the economics are favoring the Brileys but at heart I would love to have a two barrel set for some intangible reason. Any thoughts?

If I go for the two barrel set, is it typical to have a forend for each barrel or typical to have one forend that fits both barrels? Any pros & cons for this decision?

Also torn between a pretty skeleton buttplate or a recoil pad (leather covered) so any thoughts on that would be appreciated.

Thanks,
David

What the heck, here goes my first post.

It is just me, I'm a tad old fashion; but somehow choke tubes don't belong on nice side by sides. There are a couple of other options. One could have match pair built but back to my real world. How about just going with the IC/Mod. Then work on some loads or trying various manufactured shells that will give you the pattern your need.

Which brings me to the pad or skeleton plate. On a Twenty at about six pounds I plan on just hunting with I would go checkered butt or skeleton plate. Leather pads are nice but skeleton plates are just plain sexy.

If it is for hunting go with tubes and a pad. If it is for showing off go with the plate and two barrel set. Nothing wrong with either option IMO.

You are in an enviable position either way you go. One thing to consider: two barrel sets may not shoot to the same POI...just the reality of barrel regulation. If you go that route, make sure you have an agreed upon allowable variance/tollerance between you and the importer IN WRITING as part of your purchase contract.

My solution for similar 20 ga needs in a Parker VHE, which I like very well, is single set of barrels choked skeet/modified. It is perfect for grouse and quail, Hungarian partridge in Idaho and worked well for Pheasant in SD with one oz loads. I have killed crossing desert quail out at 45 and 50 yds with the modified barrel and #7 shot and Pheasants to 40yds. Even on pheasant hunts most shots are closer than that. Those two chokings are enough spread to let you select what is required, assuming you have double triggers. Hunting with a skeleton butt plate is a pain. You will be shortly be putting a removeable leather cover over it anyway so you can set it down once in a while. I know I did on a Parker Repro before selling it.

If you travel by air and/or to other countries, it is a lot easier with choke tubes.

If the two barrels are the same gauge, I don't know why they would come with two forends. I'd expect one. I have a two barrel AYA #2 set, 28 and .410. with separate forends. I love it. Haven't learned to shoot it all that well yet, but I'm working on it. It's 8 oz.heavier with the .410 barrels mounted and I seem to shoot the .410 a little better than the 28. I think the extra weight is a help. I'm a recoil pad person. Checkered butts tend to slip around in gun racks and quickly get scarred up from setting against the ground. To my unclassy eye, they look like a cheap air rifle. Skeleton butts are beautiful and classy but also not very practical for real world use, IMO.

I went through a similar thought train and ended up doing steel-compatible Briley's for a 20 ga AyA #2RA. Just wanted a nice gun appropriate for a broad range of birds.

I like two barrel sets (who doesn't) and have a nice 28 ga Parker Repro set, but just decided not to spend the extra cash. It's not as if my AyA will become a collector's item, anyway.

The good news: you can't go wrong if it makes you happy! Enjoy.

You name ends with 'guy' so I assume you are male? If so, I assume the possibility of a recoil pad is meant to be a joke.

I am male. Why would a recoil pad be a joke?
