I'm not familiar with O/U's. Do the hammers cock the same way as they do on a SxS? i.e. The forend acts on the cocking rods.

I believe that is correct - where else could you get the nice big leverage provided by the barrels. I suppose it could be a function of the top lever but that would probably require a larger top lever and some weird internals to translate the sideways motion to a rotating rearward motion. Or you could add a separate side lever to do it ala some of the drillings which use a separate lever to cock the rifle barrel. There is the Kreighoff double rifle which has the enlarged thumb safety that cocks and uncocks the hammers.

Mossberg Silver Reserve relies on the top lever to cock the hammers.

Well, there are some side-by-side designs, namely the French systeme called Ideal, that cock by the motion of the opening lever. I think I remember reading somewhere that the same company (? - Manufrance - ?) made or tried to make an o|u on the same principle, but I am possibly wrong here.

However, the Izhmech (better known abroad as Baikal) company used to make a .22/.410 combination o/u for Remington, marketed as Remington Spr 94, and this gun cocks on the motion of the openiing lever. smile
