Hello,

I know that using photos is not the way, but would appreciate general opinions:

Could this 16 bore damascus barreled (31.5" long) lady be considered for
use with CIP shells provided that the bores are healthy (according to the owner).

The last photo is not very good but shows rather healthy albeit dirty chambers.

Thanks for your opinions.

JC

I.Meffert with damascus barrels and doll head? This is pretty old gun, JC. If it has nitro proof even, it would be for light loads only. I can't figure out by these photos what kind of damascus is that, Bernard or maybe laminated steel?

Hello Geno,

If you open photos in another window you can see them better (bigger).
(Right click and choose "Open image in New Window").

The type of damascus is something I'd like to know too. I imagine that I. Meffert
being a reputable craftsman, the quality of the damascus should be above average.

According to present owner, it was made around 1900 and has no proofmarks.

JC

Here is a larger photo that will hopefully allow some of the experts to id the
type of damascus (open in another window):

Big photo

Early thanks,

JC

I guess there is no lower grade Bernard's, just Bernard-I wink
I used to shoot skeet 24 g ammo (CIP) from Springer double circa 1880 with Bernard-II damascus without any problems.

The toplever has a similar shape like the Lindner sourced Daly, Golcher, etc hammerguns. Common ancestor ? I shoot all those old hammerguns with 5000psi loads.

Clair and all, here's a C E Overbaugh with the same barrels and a resemblance to the Meffert. The Overbaugh [of Sharps Rifle fame] is marked with the Lindner crown over crossed pistols and R.S. It does seem the two have much in common.
