+1 for Daryls comment, as I was scrolling down through the post I kept thinking this is just like the Daly Hammer guns.

Without proof marks, I would think the gun predates 1892. It was most likely meant for blackpowder loads and you would need to keep the pressure lower than CIP standards. Would the gun be strong enough to handle CIP - quite likely. But that was not the makers intention and his design limitations should be respected. You can easily reload within the blackpowder limits.
Nice gun. It would be interesting to see the markings on the underside of the barrel flats and just ahead of the flats.

Hello JC, Circa 1900 without proof marks? I don't think so, but rather circa 1890. In any case if in sound condition I wouldn't mind shooting it, but would use modest 65mm/67mm loads. With kind regards, Jani

Jani, according to my info, and if the Meffert is the same source as the Overbaugh, then it must be before 1892 or so. Lots of fun mysteries in these guns.

Hello Jani, Daryl et al,
I am trying to see if I can get some markings from the gun.
It does look very much like the Overbaugh. Thanks for posting. And for the feedback.
JC

Hello Martín,
Unfortunately it is not mine, although I would love to give it a home. We'll see.

This is an old gun with relatively thin chamber walls. I would not advocate using modern CIP ammunition in it. It was not designed for it an may or may not withstand it. Not the kind of game I would like to play.
In any case get it serviced by a good gunsmith before you use it with anything.
I just saw the evidence of a .577 double rifle which blew the chamber out completely last week - probably due to accumulated stresses from incorrect modern solid bullets being used over the years. Caution is advised.

Hello Dig and thank you for your outlook. I seriously think that one should go the cautious way with such an endeavor.
Best,
JC
