Have a chance to pick up a Savage made fox in 16 gauge. 28" barrels and ejectors. I am unfamiliar with SP grade guns and cannot find much info regarding them. I compared pics on Fox web-site and I am confident that it is an SP grade. I have a couple of graded (AE) fox guns allready and was under the impression that the later savage made guns are less desirable than the early ones. What say the experts? Comparable prices to the sterlingworth? Thank you in advance for your input.

Those are great guns and highly desirable. Depending on the price, you may have found a gem.

Could I ask you to elaborate on why they are desirable? I mean I know they are still a Fox. But the reciever's are blued, minimal engraving etc. The pictures on the Fox site remind me of the later Fox model B's. (which you can't hardly give away). I am interested in this one only because it is a 16 and reportedly in "excellent" condition. The current owner is clueless as to what he has - only that it was Grandpa's gun. Are they desirable because of limited production or .... something else I am missing? Price is $700.

They are well made guns, every bit as nice as the late Philly guns. The SPE is made on a standard Fox frame with no raised panel and blued. Collectors find them desirable because so few were made and they are just nice guns in the minds of Fox Collectors. $700.00 is a screaming bargain for a 16ga ejector gun in high condition. If you pass I would gladly buy it!!

What Craig said. If you buy it and don't like it you can certainly make money at that price.

One of the founding members of the AHFCA, Tom Wyraz, authored an excellent article on SP/SPE guns in our Spring 2009 Newsletter. If you join the AHFCA you would have access to all the old Newsletters.

Buy it and sell it. If it's all original with a lot of condition, it's at least a $3-4,000 gun. You could probably sit on it for a while and get more. Guys spend years looking for them.

That being said, I don't think they're worth the money. I think they're worth about $800.

I think Sterlingworths are nicer, A grades are even better. Lefevers are far nicer, but that's another story.

SP/SPEs are rare, though, and that's why guys will pay so much for them.

I think a nice Fox SPE 16ga is worth abouth $3,000.

Can't add anything other than what the others have stated. For $700.00 you will not go wrong buying this gun. Even if it needs some minor work you can easily double or triple your money quickly. I have an SP 20 and it is a very nice gun. A real "racy" piece.

Is this 16 a SG, PG or POW? Is the butt checkerd, HRBP or a pad?
