King,
I got into hunting pen-raised pheasants with a 410 (and latter a 36 gauge ML). I found the 3" 410 to be very effective at the 25-30 yard maximum range I was shooting at. In addition, I had a dog to quickly round up any cripples. The thing with 410's is you have to rethink your shooting parameters. Since your shooting within a range of 25-30 yards, use 7.5 shot to fill out your pattern better, at that range the birds can't tell the difference. Use a maximum of a modified choke for your left barrel (modified=full in a 410) and an open or skeet choke for your right barrel. I truly think the 3" 410 is even more effective then most 12's at under 25 yards because the pattern opens up quicker.
So that's my free advice, worth every penny you've paid for it!
Steve

I too, have been using the 3" .410 for pen raised pheasant and chukar in the last two yrs since I started hunting pen birds due to our previous drought. I found I like the #6 shot at ranges out to 30-35 yds thru modified chokes or tighter.

While I have used a .410, 3", #6 shot on wild SoDak pheasant, I haven't made a habit of it. However, I'm headed in the direction of using a .410 on wild birds more next season. I have one friend that uses a .410 on all upland birds exclusively.

Hello, my names Steve and I shoot game birds with a 410... It started innocently enough years ago, I'd occasionally slip out by myself and hunt pen raised birds. Before I knew it I was using my 410 nearly exclusively. Even though I tried my best to hide the fact from hunting buddies, sometimes even using 410ERS in my 12 gauge, but eventually they found out... Oh, the shame...

Like Steve, I'm a. 410 aholic. Even though I've tried to kick the costly habit, I can't stop myself from reaching in the safe right past the 12 and 20g guns and pulling out a rediculously small. 410. The danged of it is, I don't feel guilty about it.
