I remember seeing that Savage 23D at Northeastern gun shows, two or three times, I think in the hands of different dealers. I am not good at dates but think it would have been at least ten years ago. Certainly the finest 23 in existence .... a cynic would say that Owen and Kornbrath made a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

I have the Owen Savage 23-D .22 Hornet.
Shane, Any chance you can post a picture of the Savage? I would really like to see it.

Yes, Mark, you are right. The gun bounced around for quite awhile. I also saw it in a Julia catalog from, I think, 1989 or so. I bought it from Mike Schwandt and it was actually the second time he had owned it. I don't think it got much respect since it was a Savage. It's not likely to be for sale for a very long time now-- unless my time on earth is to be much more brief than I hope. I'll try to take a few pics-- if you all promise to not laugh at my photographic ability (or lack thereof.)

I'd also love to see the Owen 23D, Shane (and I promise not to laugh at ANYBODY else's pix, since I have never figured out how to do them at all....).
I'd also like to see the 23X that somebody has, Savage's prototype 23 in .44WCF. (HOW DEY DO DAT???).
Great Owen bio, Michael; you're a national treasure!

I have the Owen Savage 23-D .22 Hornet. As Mike's article says, it is marked #1, despite the fact that he'd been building guns for years. Last year I was told by a man (another well-known gun builder) that knew Owen this was his (Owen's) own gun that he built for himself. I suppose that answers the question about it being #1-- he was the "main man" so number one was most befitting. It also makes sense that he would choose an inexpensive Savage since he definitely wasn't wealthy. It has a beautiful piece of wood and is Kornbrath engraved-- possibly as a favor for the friend that had given him so much work. It has to be the nicest Savage in the world. I doubt Kornbrath engraved another. That's a swell story, which gunmaker knew Owen? I would be very interested to learn what year it was built.

Until Shane can get some pictures I think it would look something like this.

That is hands down the best looking Savage I've ever seen, with the possible exception of a truly high grade Model 99 I once ran across.

Very nice and I really like the proportions of the forend.I guess it shows you don't need a piece of exhibition wood to really set a gun apart.

Jack Haugh told me it was Owen's gun. He didn't offer a guess as to when it was built.
