Mr. Kofoed,
What kind of hand loads do you use for the .22 Hornet? I saw your post on the other Waldlaufer line...
Have you noticed any change/improvement in accuracy with lower velocities?
I have a little drilling that shoots 1/2" groups at 100 yards with a scope, but I would like to use it with open sights at closer distances.

I might exagerate a little, but I remember groups below 1" with Hornady, S&B and Remingtons. I'll look on my notes and repost this tonight...

My goal was finding a low-velocity Hornet load to somewhat duplicate .22 rimfire.
I settled on 2 grains of Red-Dot measured with the smallest Lee plastic powder dipper; no rocket science here. I neck-size my nickel plated cases with a Lee collet die and place them in a homemade wooden 50 case holder. I use a custom, lathe-turned, plastic funnel to pour the powder directly into the small rifle-primed case from the dipper. I leave a hole between full and empty cases in the holder so I don't double-charge. I then seat a 45 grain Sierra round-nose bullet (I used to use Winchester RN bullets but they quit making them).
Shoots fine out to 50 yards or so in my barreled drilling insert and the neck-sized cases last forever.
For full power loads, I find the Hornday factory ammo is very accurate, often making one of those "iffy" Hornet barrels settle down considerably.
Of course, you are on your own liability-wise with this information; good shooting.

That would be my goal, too. I find that the .22 Hornet is too much for shooting small game at 25-50 yards. Besides, the drilling is set to shoot at 100 yards I believe because it shoots about 2" high at 50. Maybe with a less powerful round it will drop some at 50.

Still excellent groups! The most accurate Hornet I've ever personaly witnessed was a pre war Model 70 carbine that shot 10 shots under an inch with factory Winchester ammo!!!

Vol, this is the other topic: http://www.doublegunshop.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=151091#Post151091I have learned that the older .22 Hornet have a .223" barrel compared to the more modern ones with .224. Also the twist rate is different making lighter or heavier bullets more accurate depending on that. I haven't figured yet the twist rate and I have to still slug the barrels to see if this is an older .223 version. I don't know if I can find bullets for the .223 anyway.
