The gun is one of the very last under lever snap actions built by Boss. The two serial number guns previous to it were top lever ejectors. Boss was building, at the time this gun was constructed, fluid steel barrel, hammerless ejectors.
That is why it is a bit out of period. jOe, the things you are missing we can't help you with here. Have you even READ the ad?

Ted I did read the add. I don't recall learning from the add description that Boss was building Fluid steel in 1888 ?
If they were building fluid steel barrels in 1888 I'm sure it was not for many years.
I do know most all makers were building Damascus Hammer guns long after 1888.
I'd be curious as to when the last under-lever thumb latch was built ?.
How many years do you think it takes to put a gun "out of period" ?...(as you called it).
