Craigster,

Thanks for the info.
How much difference does it make using .223 vs.224 bullets accuracy wise?

I don't recall all the details on it but there was an intermediate round between the old .22 WCF & the Hornet, with almost identical dimensions to these. It was developed in Germany as I recall for use as the small caliber in the 4-bbl combo's & was often used in singles, drillings etc & was known as the 5.56x35R Vierling. Best as I recall this round was only loaded to a max velocity of around 2,000 fps, much lighter than a full Hornet load. I have a really neat little Geco scoped single shot bolt action with a cracked receiver at the lug seat, which was no doubt built around this lighter load & subsequently used with Hornet loads.

I've used both diameters in both older (.223) and newer (.224) Hornets. I really never noticed any difference in accuracy and saw no signs of excess pressure using the 224s in older rifles. I have some Sierra 45gr 223 Hornets, I'll send you some if you'd like to try them in your drilling.

Craigster,

Thank you for your offer.
However, I am not set up for reloading, yet.
I am going to measure the twist in the rifling and slug the barrels.
I understand that older barrels have a slower twist at 1:16 that is more suitable for lighter bullets and the newer barrels are faster with 1:14 better for heavier bullets.
