Chuck, I agree that finishing techniques that give a shiny bowling pin finish have no place on the guns we discuss most often here. I definitely lean toward more traditional finishes and appearance. On the other hand, finishes such as Permalyn and other oil modified urethanes used with in the wood applications do give us the best of both worlds.
I have a full gallon of Imron clear plus the activator in my garage, but doubt if I'll try it on a gun. Nor am I likely to do a stock with boiled linseed oil. I just sat here several minutes trying to think of a one sentence explanation for that. No dice.
