I do not know about that Chuck, but I bought MEK to thin a clear auto finish a year or so ago....they carried at my local hardware at the time.

MEK is an ingredient in PVC pipe cleaner solvent, along with acetone and toluene. But just because it is common and legal in the marketplace is no reason not to use caution and minimize exposure. This goes for any organic solvent.

SKB, were you using the automotive clear coat on a car or on a gunstock? As I was spraying the cap on my pick-up this fall, I was wondering how well it might work as a stock finish.

Keith,
Browning used Dupont Imron polyurethane (an automotive poly) for years. Beretta is using something similar on some of their guns.

While I'm not totally opposed to these types of finishes, I think certain techniques like spraying on coats and usually done doesn't produce the best looking finish. Thinning a lot and sanding in a few coats then applying very thin coats of highly thinned finish with a rag, then fine sanding and polishing will give really outstanding results

Chuck, I agree that finishing techniques that give a shiny bowling pin finish have no place on the guns we discuss most often here. I definitely lean toward more traditional finishes and appearance. On the other hand, finishes such as Permalyn and other oil modified urethanes used with in the wood applications do give us the best of both worlds.
I have a full gallon of Imron clear plus the activator in my garage, but doubt if I'll try it on a gun. Nor am I likely to do a stock with boiled linseed oil. I just sat here several minutes trying to think of a one sentence explanation for that. No dice.

My personal favorite is Pro-Custom Oil aerosol. I spray it into a cup and thin another few percent, then sand it in a few coats. Then Scotchbrite a bit, spray a few coats, sand, and polish.

As to MEK, the stuff that is the real troublemaker is MEK peroxide. Google each and you will see the difference.
