Hi all, just was curious to see what some of you have in the way of English guns. Here's my battery:

Edward & George Higham, 12b, BLE
William Palmer Jones, 12b, BLE
Samuel Allport (HammerGun), 12b
Charles Boswell 2d Quality, 16b, BLE
Webley & Scott Model 500 Grade 2, 16b BLE

So...what do you have?

All the best!

Greg

I've only got one English gun at the present---a 12-ga. John Blanch & Son sidelever back-action hammergun with 30" damascus bbls. I would like to find another English gun...a dainty .410 toplever back-action hammergun with steel bbls and a London address....any leads would be appreciated!

Only one, and my first foray into English guns... a bargain basement J F Smythe labeled Birmingham BLNE 12. Sure feels svelte in the hands compared to my pound heavier Beretta GR-2.

What's the story on the Boswells and the Greener? They sound like nice guns.

Just one, a 16 bore Jones underlever Joseph Lang hammer gun completed March 6, 1866. It was rebarreled in damascus by James Woodward probably before 1882 and maybe even in or before 1872 depending on which authority you believe for Woodwards name change from "James Woodward" to "James Woodward and Sons".

She's a sweet shootin' little 16.

No British guns, but there are British rifles.
-Westley Richards TLH 16bore Double Rifle (3" case!!)
-Purdey 20bore Double Rifle (lever under guard)
-WJ Jeffery 6.5mm Mannlicher sporting rifle (Sweet!)
-Westley Richards .303 Lee-Speed sporting rifle (Sweet!)

I haven't seen any sign of my vault in months, as we're preparing for our move over the Sierras OUT OF CALIFORNIA in the coming weeks.

I can't wait to get settled and back out in the timber for another hunt.

I have some put together by Tom Armbrust. The velocity is right but the rounds need some adjustments( maybe minor) for my gun but they work well in other Faunetas. Capped bullets are in the works but could be a couple of years off. Do you have a rifled choke 20?

Only one Brit gun, a lovely little Lacey (Birmingham) 12 bore hammer gun with laminated steel barrels and black powder proofs, built sometime prior to 1890. Feels like a 16, and purchased from one of the good members here.

OWD,

I forgot 2 other Boswell guns:
12 hammer pigeon gun, 30" damascus, pitted bores, checkering worn smooth. The original case is in better shape than the gun. Bores are proofed 13/14, chambers are 2 1/2 12. There is room for honing. It is a best hammer pigeon, just shot to near death.
The other project is a very early Boswell 12 top-lever hammer, early wedge forend, non-rebounding back action gun. It has the same early address the 10 hammer has (Edmond St). The SN is in the 2xxx range. It has badly blued damascus barrels and pits you wouldn't drive a 4x4 through.
The 10 bore, SN 7016, is really early, 32" bbls, 2 5/8 nitro. I think it is on an 8 bore frame as the fences are huge. I use it in Vintager 10 events. Patent marks date it to around 1878.
The 3 SLE's are 12290 sleeved, 2nd grade, 13030 sleeved 2nd grade, and 13330 Nitro damascus Best gun. Chris Batha has the records on 13330 for 1899. The other guns are earlier and those records are lost. I have looked at the locks of all 3 guns and they are totally different even though only 40 SNs apart. I guess Boswell sourced them from different outworkers.
The Bosell projects are guns whose barrels I'll use to learn how to brown. I have an E. Lang, Masu and Ithaca Crass all with nice Damascus patterns and badly pitted bores. I just need to finish moving and fitting out the vault workbenchs for projects.

OWD,

The Greener is 36449, from 1894. It is 30" nitro damascus, F/F, POW grip, stunning wood and freshly rebrowned. It came with the original case including a very rare G-gun cocking tool, turn screws and Greener snap caps. Sadly the case interior has fallen apart, but the goodies were all still amongst the bits.

The G-gun is an odd beast. After firing the gun the ejectors kick out the shells on opening. You have to be mindful to continuing to open the gun a little more so the gun can cock. If you don't open the gun enough to cock the hammers, IT WILL NOT CLOSE. Forcing it to close breaks it and means an expensive trip to Graham Greener to set right.

Don Amos was spinning guns at the Southern SxS April 2009. There were 3 G guns in the que. We compared guns and it was easy to spot the variations on the same action pattern.

My gun is a lower grade G. Nigel Brown's book lists a wide range of grades. I haven't sent for the history from Graham yet.

Joe-

Thanks for the info. It sounds like you have some great guns. I love G guns - beautiful stuff, superb craftsmanship. I would love to find one with a top safety. I've seen a few built with them, very few. Any chance yours has a top safety?

Egerton-

Nice guns - especially the Boss & Woodward O/Us. What's the story with the Greener Imperial and the Scott Premier shotgun? Any pics? I would love to see them. What's the vintage on the Scott? I love those Premiers.

And is your H&H O/U a newer one or one of the ones may made around WW2 (right before or after, I can't recall).

Thanks

OWD

OWD,

My Greener is the side safety version. I had an FH50 from the 1920s with top safety. I sold it years ago.

When the move is finished, I'll have a place to photo the guns and get some of the unique guns/proofs posted.

H&H Royal Over and Under was made in 1994
The Greener is like the gun in plate 205 in the book The Greener Story. This gun has no saftey and has a three tier drop side lock. The W.C.Scott Premier Imperial SxS Rook rifle was converted to a 22 Hornet it was imported into Bombay India, made in 1893. The W.C.Scott Premier SxS is a back action side lock made in 1885. I will try to post photographs of the rook rifle as soon as I can take a good picture of it.

Very nice. Thanks for the info.

The Greener you refer to in the book is a fabulous gun. Is your Greener a pigeon gun or a regular game gun?

Lets see some pics of the Premier shotgun, too.

Which type of stock does it have?

Thanks

I am currently(and hopefully for a very long time to come) shooting a Holland Royal self opener circa 1924

I like it a lot. The Holland is in remarkably original condition.I also have an Ogden slne brummy gun that I shoot well and enjoy.

Frederick Beesley 12 SLE from 1898 (my fathers gun, bought in 1975)
Army & Navy 12 SLE from 1935
Henry Clarke & Sons, Leicester 12 BLE from around 1930 (my grandfathers gun, bought new)
(Not English: AYA .410 BLE Hammer single barrel, my first shotgun)

And on the wish list: Pair John Wilkes 20 SLE, since that is my family name too!

According to David Dryhurst, this gun was ordered by a Mr Palmer on the 30.9.1889. It is a treble wedgefast action, 34'barrels (M & F)and extra 36' barrels (both open cyl) It was built by amongst their best workers and of very high quality. The gun belonged to a farmer in the Howick, Natal districk in the late 1890's and just before the Boer/Brit War broke out, the gun was confiscated by the then magistrate, a mr Gedue. He liked what he saw and kept the gun for himself. I bought the gun off his great grandson unseen. I actually was told about the guncase, so I bought the case (for R750-00 or $100-00) and got the gun with the case. I have since 'restored' (i.e. cleaned up) the gun and it is quite special. I do have pictures but unfortunately don't know how to post.

Charls

They really did make some nice guns.

12 ga. EM Rielly Jones underlever hammer damascus
Westley Richards 20 ga. Jones under lever hammer.
Webley and Scott 12 Model 700
William Palmer Jones 12 gauge Live bird gun (Hazards Club)
BSA 32" 3"mag duck destroyer.

I once bought a William Powell 12 at a gun show for $200. Nice gun too. I gave it to my best friend for Christmas and the rascal never shoots it. Should have kept it.

Bob: I have revised my earlier post in agreement with you that "Quality and not quantity is what really counts" BTW, you didn't mention, what's in your safe?

-I. Hollis 12 bore hammer gun
-R. Robinson 12 bore BLNE

There should be a pair of Hollands over and unders in 16 bore, an old 416 Rigby and a good old english double rifle that has seen several generations of use. All should be set up for left handed use.

But just checked the cabinet and there is sadly
just my W J Jeffery 410 side by side Boxlock

There was a 410 Single Barrel "English Made" (ie no makers name) on a Ward Patent action - this is now with my nephews where it resides alongside a Stensby boxlock ejector.

I am keeping my eyes open for a nice 16 bore boxlock or even sidelock ejector for my wife to use to replace her 20 bore Rizzini.

And I want a 12 Bore Magnum side by side duck / goose gun - fed up with a Benelli

I do also have a very nice 12 bore AyA Coral over and under, that sits alongside a Ferlach built 16 bore / 7x65R combination gun and a Heym SR20 bolt action rifle in 243.

Whatever I said before AND as of today an 1880 Greener Facile Princeps 12ga that I bought off our 'for sale' section here from one of our other members. Delighted with it, and plan to use it to smoke a Gobbler with some BP shells in about a month...Geo

OK... here's my list with comments on a few - I plead guilty to collecting.
About 10% are "scrap" requiring sleeving etc.
About 10% are going on the market to make room for others.
About 20% are decent and functional but in the long run intended for engraving projects.
Only about 10 to 20% would be considered best guns.
They are a collection of "gumnakers" from the Northeast of England.

Most of mine are rifles but I have two go to British shotguns and one project shotgun.

12 bore H&H royal self opener is my main shotgun
H Clarke 12 bore BLE 25" bbls, Churchill rib 6lbs even, grouse gun
I have a Wesley 12 bore fancy back ble that is a personal project gun.
my double rifle is an A Henry SLNE in .360 2&7/16" BPE
H&H in .30 Super on a PD Farq, only single built in this caliber
Westley 1897 falling block, extra finish Best in .256
H&H woodward project being re-barreled in .375 flanged Magnum
Lancaster cased best percussion .50 cal oval bore

Shotguns were my main interest but once I bought my H&H I kinda stopped looking at them.....cray I know but that one scratched my itch.

Mine's like the bargain basement after seeing and reading about the lovely guns on here so far.
W.H. Monk (Chester) 12 BLNE.
William Richards (Liverpool) 12 BLE
W. Griffiths (Manchester) 16 BLNE
Lee Enfield (BSA) 1917 sporterised .410
(All Brummie guns smile )
The Richards needs work and the Griffiths is well past its best, will probably end up a deactivated cutaway action wall hanger, shame really as it's got Ford barrels, sadly, shortened and pitted to hell.

Since my last post of February 2010, I have added a cased pair of William Evans sidelock crossover guns that have become my favorite all around sporting clays and FITASC guns. I have even shot one box bird shoot with one of them, with good results. A good friend and shooting buddy let me become the custodian of his great London Rigby .375 H&H Mauser. He had it built in 1969 and has retired from hunting that requires such a gun. No, I don't need it, but I just had to have it. My next British gun may be Rocky Mtn Bill's Cashmore Nitro, which I have never seen, but know I need. Bill Murphy

Since no one has this maker represented thus far, I'll add a Fredrick T. Baker to the listing. Roman numerals engraved on the gun date manufacture to 1883; a lightweight 26" Damascus BLNE with Anson and Deely action, double triggers, and straight grip. Have no idea as to grade, but the gun oozes quality and features 100% very fine rose and scroll engraving with the word "SAFE" in gold. It also features a very weird safety device that is mounted on a metal plate and inletted into the left side of the stock cheek. I've not a clue as to why someone would order such a safety device, but to operate the safely must be pulled rearwards; which is opposite one's natural inclination to push the slide forwards, so not a greatest safety device for jump shooting. My wife gave me the gun as a graduation gift in the 70's; and when received the barrels were blue leading me to believe they were steel, as they were unmarked. For several years it was the only double I owned so it was used exclusively and with all manner of loads before I learned its barrels were Damascus; but in the interim, it bagged a large truckload of game ranging in size from deer down to snipe.

Me too. I owned a Holland & Holland pre Royal with a Holland patent single trigger, the weird one that you click forward to choose the tight barrel, that was bought as an English gun project, and taught me to never try that again.

I also owned a McNaughton boxlock NE, that was a single digit before the first gun in the record book, a very early steel barreled gun with 29" tubes, straight hand stock and close to 100% engraving. Nice gun. Never gave me any trouble.

Been tempted, but, I need more guns like I need more kids.

Far-more elegant than it's owner James, thank you! We're just biding our time here.....waiting for Grousmas. About 38 days out, at the moment.
