Quite right, Chuck. It's possible to get Dextron to a temp. at which it's essentially "burnt" (no lube quality) at which point a fluid change is in order. Or you can pay them later for a tranny.

Joe; Mine came in a round plastic bottle from which the label has long since deteriorated, but it would appear to also be of 8oz capacity. I am almost certain I bought it some 25-30 years ago from Dixie Gun Works & it wasn't sold as "Lamp Oil", but that sure seems to be what it is. It is still about 3/4's full, the botle is about 6" tall & right now there is a solid layer on the bottom about ¼" thick. Many years ago my Mother gave me the little metal oil can which had come in her old singer trealde machine as she no longer bought oil in a manner in which she refilled the can. I had filled this can with the sperm oil for use on my guns & over a matter of some time it refused to squirt. I then noted the spout was totally clogged & there was a layer of sludge all around the bottom of the can. This little Singer can was nearling empty then, except for the sludge, so I cleaned up & quit using that oil, period. I have heard this same trait referenced to 3-in-1 oil & had one lady tell me she could look at an old sewing machine & tell if it had been poiled with 3-in-1 because it would be all gummed up. I have used several gallons of that stuff over the past 50+ years & have never had that experience with it. I highly suspect those machines she accredits to the 3-in-1 had been oiled with a low grade sperm which had been passed off as High Grade Sewing Machine Oil. I know I would much prefer 3-in-1 to this mess anyday.

After a group of trap shooter at one of the local clubs began a debat on proper lubrication and most of them liked a synthetic grease I made a call to Kirk Merrington.
Kirk does a lot of work for me including stip & cleans on my best guns. I asked what he used when he lubes a gun.
He advised that a 50/50 mix of 3 in 1 oil and vaseline. that is what was used when he was at the shops in England and he has never found a better lube. For weekly shooting I use straight vaseline.
One thing that Kirk pointed out was the exposure to oils can be a long term problem and the valeline does not present that risk.
It is also VERY inexpensive. Those trap guys are paying $9 for some little tube of synthetic bike lube.

3-in-1 and petroleum jelly looks just like RIG when mixed. particularly in an old RIG tin. An informal comparison in a guncase left in a closed automobile in summer makes me think the melting pt. of RIG is lower than that of the "whatyagot about the house" mix. Fumbling around and spilling half the RIG and finding the "jelly" still in a jelly state convinced me. I do like the "cling" of that Mobil 1 racing oil (particularly on the slide and frame rails of pistols) but half the battle on a break action is cleaning off abrasive residue and powder flakes BEFORE lubing, at which pt. almost anything and everything works.

For low heat the Mobil 1 should not be an issue but I have been told it is batch processed. I had inconsistant results in one of the two cars I ran it in.
Can anyone confirm it is batch made and subject to variable consistancy?

Al, I don't know if its batch run, but I've used M1 in my 99 truck since new and it has 217,000 miles on it. Still runs great. The new 2008 truck I bought a yr or so ago has had M1 since the first change as well and now has 31,000 with no problems. There's a site called bobtheoilguy.com that has some really knowledgeable folks on there. M1 seems to get a lot of following. I'm sold on it.
But on the double shotguns, anything should work fine. Think about the surface speed and pressures and temps involved...very little of any of those...use anything you like.

I am glad a thread about lube has surfaced again. I am looking for confirmation, hopefully as to what I have. I purchased it at a Houston sporting goods store 15 years ago, and I have used it sparingly over the years as one drop goes a long way. Before the bottle lost its picture/logo, it said Smith and Wesson (S&W) as in the revolver makers. I can't remember the active ingredients, but does this look like whale's oil to anyone else out there? I do know you need to shake well before using. Did anyone else in the past go to a Carters Country around Houston and purcase this same bottle? I'm just trying to remember what I might have. Thanks.

I have a bottle of what was labeled Sperm Whale Oil (SWO) I got about 20 years ago at a gun show in NH. Was old, looked old and have no reason not to believe the seller, certainly smells pleasant. Mine is a deeper orange and has not separated like the above. FWIw a coating of SWO is the traditional method used to bring color to a meerschaum pipe before smoking and it certainly does that well.

RedofTx: If I were forced to guess what you've got pictured...I'd say it was CLP/BreakFree....or something very similar. It looks just like my container of CLP that has been sitting for some time. SHAKE WELL BEFORE USING. I also note your fluid is in a SOFT bottle. I found out "the hard way" that CLP decanted from its large "soft plastic" jug into a smaller "hard" plastic bottle, will eat away/weaken the bottom in about four (IIRC) months...so that when you lift the bottle up, the bottom stays on the shelf. UGLY scene.
