Hi Chuck,
you've often mentioned you use Mobil One for general gun oil. Why and what weight do you prefer?

I use Mobil 1 general purpose synthetic grease for my guns. The "why" of my logic is that I believe any general purpose chassis grease is designed to lubricate much higher pressure and higher surface speed bearings and joints under much harsher conditions than our guns have and for longer "change" durations. So, I fill a syringe with my truck chassis grease, which happens to be Mobil 1 general purpose chassis grease. That's it. IMO, no further analysis or handwringing over what grease to use is required, just use your automotive chassis grease, whatever you have on hand for your cars. BTW, Mobil 1 chassis grease is at nearly every auto store around here.

I guess I mis-mesmerized what I thought I heard you say. I was thinking you used the oil. We're together on using grease in heavy load areas. I worked for NCR back when machines were all cams, gears, links, rolls and studs.

Mobil One Universal Synthetic is what it says one the tube, tub, or, whatever. Funny pink color, stable lube from -50 to 475 degrees F, or, some ridiculous number like that. Mr. Moody prefers Mobil 28, which, is aircraft rated, but, I think he just like the association with 28 gauge, in this case.
Either, is better lube then any gun was designed for.

Last August, while at a George Hickox dog seminar in Oregon, my brand new H&R blank pistol wouldn't fire. It seemed to have roughness in the action. I didn't have any tools available, and the only lube I had was a quart of Mobil 1 5-30w full synthetic. A few drops of that stuff and some double action cycling and it was working fine. McGyver 1 oil

Another interest of mine is antique sewing machines, have a Wheeler & Wilson dating to 1861, along with a bunch more dating on up to non-antique classifications. A lite oil is needed for these so in lieu of the high priced Singer oil, I have totally switched over to the use of Mobil 1 0W-20 & found it perfectly satisfactory.

Over the yrs, I've read a number of threads on the characteristics and benefits of sperm oil. I think the synthetics can perform as well or better in most applications where sperm oil was used.

Has anyone used transmission oil? I have used it mixed with vasoline but don't know if it will do any thing to the wood finish. Mike

Just my opinion, but grease and oil attract dirt which grinds into the action of any thing. I would think MolyCote would be a better alternative.
