I would like to try a BSS 20 ga. as a second gun to my 687 SP II next trip. I much prefer reloading a S x S that opens well and wide to an O/U. That would really be the acid test for the single trigger on a BSS. I expect that it would hold up, but it would be interesting to see.

A full choked gun would definitely be a hindrance there, but not 30" barrels, IMO. I much prefer that length on a dove gun, as long as handling is good. I wouldn't want a SP II with barrels any shorter for doves.

I believe the poster is traveling to SA South Africa, and not South America.
The good advice given above still stands, but the high volume of one is quite different from the other. South Africa will be far from the volumes of Argentina, specially if combining a big game and wingshooting trip.

Regarding choice of gun for doves in Argentina, it goes down to personal preferences, and in this, I include the kind of cover you are shooting.
IMO, The great thing about Argentina dove hunts, is the variety of places where you can shoot them.
You can snap shoot all day in heavy cover where skeet&skeet would be perfect, or go for something a bit higher,or much higher , shooting from the valleys or in the flyways in open ground to and from the roost.

Again IMO, break action guns are always better, as they are easier to load and present fewer problems.
Sometimes the loads leave so much residue, that auto's begin to jam after 3 or 4 boxes.
Absolutely no reason to take a 12 gauge, 20 is good 28 is even better !!

The originator of this thread Mark, is a personal friend of mine and it is indeed South Africa that is his destination and ducks is the high volume quarry that he's inquiring about. Mark told me that his outfitter has told him that he can expect about 1000 shots per day at ducks---kind of hard to comprehend, but that's what he's been told.

Thanks again for all the input. I have emailed the outfitter to verify the availability and type of ammo. I am leaning in the direction of a simple well made German boxlock extractor gun fit with as much recoil reduction as I can. Not too heavy not too light and easy to open and close.

I would really rethink the extractor part of that idea. Any kind of volume at all will render your thumb and forefinger very sore from pulling out those empties. My old hands look like gator paws from 40 years of farming, but I wouldn't even consider that. IMO, ejectors are a necessity for volume shooting.

Hard to beat a Perazzi MX8-20 (drop out trigger group) for this stuff. Easy to change springs if required (have had mine for over 15 years, have never broken one, don't want to think about how many shells have gone through it), heavy enough to kill high volume recoil, industrial use tough.

Among the easiest ejector guns to open and close are the 680 series over unders and the Model 21 side by side. Some guns, like the Krieghoff, have very heavy top lever springs and may be too much for some shooters for thousands of shots. A 680 series Beretta can be made into a real pleasant gun by clipping a turn off the ejector springs. This also makes it very unlikely to break an ejector.
