One of the things not usually considered on a high volume gun is overall weight. First thought would be that heavier would be better, to absorb recoil, but not so. Reasonable gunfit is more important than mass to reducing recoil related problems. The additional weight can become more of a hindrance than a benefit due to the effort expended each time the gun is lifted to the shoulder. Stan is exactly right; what gives out 1st on those high-volume dove shoots, about the 3rd day, is your left arm (assuming you are a righty)...Geo

Never been to Argentina, but have been on several high-volume Mexico dove hunts and always shot a model 21 16 gauge. Never had a problem. In fact, I've been shooting model 21's for over 40 years and never had a malfunction.

Do most of these outfitters have a few thousand rounds of light 16 gauge loads?

Never been on South Aamerica bird hunt or any similar high volume shooting hunt. However, some of my favorate 16 gauge ammos are from Spain or SA. These have well over 1300 fps muzzle velocity and pattern really well with small birdshot (6, 7, 7,5s). Great for fast moving birds and olympic-speed clays.
One does need a strong gun that will handle well over 12000 psi loads with absolutely no plastic deformation to metal parts -- hot Latino stuff!!
No personal information about 12 or 20 guage Latino shotshells, but, would expect similar ballistics, internal as well as external.

eightbore,
The one we hunt with keeps everything except 16 ga. all the time, but I feel sure if someone told him, when they booked, that they would need 16 ga. he would have them. He literally buys shells by the tractor-trailer load. They are all loaded in Argentina, as there is a 100% import duty on anything coming into the country. Quality is first rate. The brand names I used last time are ORBEA and RD. A couple of the boxes also say CAZA, and one says TODO TERRENO. Most all of the twenties are 24 and 25 grams, but the last day I was shooting some high, rising doves that were all incomers trying to clear a grove of very tall trees behind me. The bird boy dumped the first box of shells in my shell bag that morning and I immediately noticed more recoil than ever before. A little later I looked at one of the boxes and he had brought me 28 gram loads for the high birds he knew would be there. Boy, they were hot! I didn't like the heavier loads and asked him to get me some more 7/8 oz. loads, which he did, and they were plenty for the high birds.
That mornings' shoot was some of the most challenging dove shooting I've ever had in 50 years of chasing them. Certainly the most challenging I ever saw down there. It is burned into my memory in detail.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

Jeez, Stan, forget the guns. How does a human stand up to the pounding? I'm long-gone from old boxer and football condition but I couldn't think of firing a thousand rounds a day with any load, any shotgun.

I'm with KB on this one. I can hold my own (me thinks) during extended shooting but 1K rounds is too much for me!

King,
It was very eye-opening for me the first trip. I was expecting bruising and pain from 1200 plus rounds a day, even with a twenty and 7/8 oz. loads, but never a bruise and all tenderness would be gone by time to shoot the next morning. And I am 6'2" and only weigh 164 lbs. However, one of my close friends who went with us took a twenty semi-jammamatic. He kept complaining about the recoil and pain, but I really didn't know what was going on for a day or two. He showed me his shoulder and I couldn't believe it. There was an area roughly 5 inches square that was as raw as hamburger meat. We got home on Thursday and, the following Sunday morning after church he was bleeding through his dress shirt. I can only assume it is all about gun mounting. I think he does not "address" the target as squarely as I, and his gun actually slides across his shoulder in recoil. He's tough though, he shot continuously like that for four days, then went back a few years later. Another buddy, who must weigh at least 280, and solid as a brick, was eating ibuprofen tablets every morning eight at a time, 1600 mg per round, and you couldn't have knocked the grin off his face with a two by four.
May God bless America and those who defend her.

I once had a dentist along on one of those Cordaba dove shoots. He bruised up so badly on the 1st day, he shot the rest of the trip with his wallet duct taped to his shoulder as a pad.
Luckily for him, he was in the medical field, so his wallet was plenty thick...Geo
