I have a beautiful old Griefelt 12 bore hammer gun with .060 and .060 chokes and barrel walls as thick as I have ever seen, just massive. Built in the 1920's with nitro proofed steel barels. Not sure of the intended use, perhaps HIGH flying driven birds. This is the tightest choked gun I have seen. Highly engraved, outstanding wood, apparently a purpose built gun for someone, I would love to know the story.

Chief, the Griffin and Howe research site has Griefelt serial numbers. Check it out, or post your serial number and I'll check it out for you. I found a Griefelt duck gun in those records last year.

Those bores are right in the middle of the "full" range. Some makers got by with as little as 30 mils, but most probably put 35-40 mils in their full choked guns.
Today, if the intent is to shoot doubles at trap, most shooters will use something like a 15/30 mils combination, give or take. Keep in mind the better ammo in use today, too. In days of yore, trap doubles were not shot very much, which is a nice way of saying most people didn't bother getting all mental about it. I think the thought process was something along the lines of, "Hmm, it's trap times two, and trap is full choke, so two full chokes."
Of the ten or so trap double guns I have had the opportunity to put a bore gauge to, only one had something other than the favored full/full combination.

All the M21's I have measured marked as FULL have been 35 thousands.
Conversely, Browning Supers marked *(FULL) are 39/40 thousands.-Dick

eightbore, thanks, I did not realize they had Griefelt numbers in a database. Alas, my number is not listed, mine is 140 above the nearest number below mine, and 130 below the nearest number above it. They only list a total of just over 700 records for Griefelt, and they were in business for quite some time, I understand. Mine has barrels clearly marked with the Sauer intertwined "SuS" logo, so they obviously got the barrel tubes, or maybe the assembled barrels from Sauer. I'll likely hang onto it, although I really have no use for that much choke in a gun. It's really a high class gun.

The catalogue specs for the Iver Johnson SUPERTRAP was 32 inch barrels full choke in both --

Mine has the automatic saftety, double triggers and a still soft Jostam Antiflinch.
The forend looks awkward but I think it quite nice. In a pinch it could be used as a cricket bat.
Checkering is nice, as is the wood. Gun looks used but I am not going to refinish it or reblue it.
